What is this? Prof O’Brien and Dr Gawler were special guests on the Conversation Hour on 774 ABC Melbourne on Thursday, May 22.

The Conversation Hour is the second highest rating radio program in the State and Thursday’s program prompted a big response.

For the first time, Health Care card holders in the Western Suburbs have access to a new way of
overcoming the challenges of cancer, with support from The Gawler Foundation.
Starting in Footscray in May, The Cancer 12-Week Healing and Wellbeing program offers an
active self-help course designed to improve quality and quantity of life by helping people to help
themselves.
This acclaimed program was developed by Dr Ian Gawler OAM and uses an integrative approach
which complements and enhances standard medical care.
Since 1981 this approach has helped thousands of people affected by cancer, including their
families, carers and friends.
The program will be held at the Bluestone Church, 8a Hyde Street Footscray, next to the
Maribyrnong City Council offices, and will run over 12 weeks every Thursday from 10am until
12.30pm, starting on Thursday 29 May 2008.
Cost for health care card holders is reduced to only $35 for the entire 12 weeks, a fraction of the
normal cost, made possible through the generous support of the Tattersalls George Adams
Foundation.
Based on Dr Gawler’s bestselling book ‘You Can Conquer Cancer’, each program session
focuses on a specific theme of self-help, including good nutrition, a positive state of mind,
meditation and various forms of support, comprising the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual
aspects of healing and wellbeing.
The ‘Integrative Approach’ has proven itself as complementary to mainstream medical treatment,
while at the same time providing additional skills and support for activating and developing the
body’s natural, inherent capacity to heal itself.
The program is facilitated by two experienced therapists, Seikan Cech and Lesley French, each
of whom combine extensive clinical experience with first-hand insights from using self-help
methods for health and wellbeing.
“This 12 week program is very much trans-cultural,” said Seikan, who is a Buddhist Monk in the
Zen tradition.
“I invite people of all cultural backgrounds affected by cancer to avail themselves of this service.”
