CANCER patients in Maroondah will learn how to deal with the disease through nutrition and meditation at a 16-week course beginning next month.’Living well – cancer, healing and wellbeing’ is run by the Gawler Foundation, which also offers the course at Belgrave, Dandenong and Burwood.

Gawler Foundation therapist and group leader Robyn Jones said cancer was “not a death sentence” and urged people to remember that 56per cent of cancer patients were cured.

“We are not a substitute for conventional medicine but it is crucial to tackle cancer mentally as well as physically.

“It’s about knowing what you can do to keep yourself in control and full of hope and how that can play a major role in the healing process.

“The program gives patients and their supporters the tools to make wise choices by giving them the knowledge they need, peace of mind and options.

“If a course is offered locally then people don’t have to travel, they can be part of a network and get a shared understanding about what they may be going through,” she said.

Cr Nora Lamont said the Gawler Foundation offered people with cancer a holistic approach to healing.

“People with cancer have a lot on their plate and this program really allows them to focus on themselves and their healing.”

The program is from 10.30am every Wednesday from July 1 to September 16 at Federation Estate, 32 Greenwood Avenue, Ringwood. Cost: $430 for patients and $215 for support people.
