A $5,000 grant from the State Trustees Australia Foundation will help The Gawler Foundation continue to run a 12 week cancer self-help program in Melbourne’s West.

The grant aims help people from a low socio-economic background, or those suffering financial hardship, attend a Gawler Foundation 12 week cancer Healing and Wellbeing program in Footscray.

State Trustees Managing Director, Mr Tony Fitzgerald said the annual State Trustees Australia Foundation grant was designed to provide a boost for organisations like the Gawler Foundation, that support Victoriansand Australians in need.

The State Trustees Australia Foundation grant aims to support a particularly vulnerable group of individuals while ensuring that the program can be delivered on an ongoing basis in the Western suburbs.

“We are thrilled to be able to make these much-needed funds available to such a worthy organisation, particularly one that supports vulnerable Victorians,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

The State Trustees Australia Foundation is a public charitable trust administered by Victoria’s State Trustees, boasting a high-calibre advisory board that makes recommendations on funds distribution, based upon strict selection criteria.

Mr Fitzgerald said the foundation is largely funded by individuals who include their wishes in their Wills, or make living bequests. As a result it provides income in perpetuity to charities operating within, and supporting the Australian community.

“The value and importance of trusts is beginning to be understood by the Australian community. Today trusts are being seen more and more as a positive way to give back to the community on an on-going basis, beyond your own life-time,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

Gawler Foundation chief executive Karin Knoester said participants in the Gawler Foundation’s 12 week lifestyle program learn about the benefits of diet, meditation, positive thinking, patient empowerment and relationship healing with the aim of encouraging lifestyle and behaviour change promoting better management of their illness.

Ms Knoester said the skills developed during the course are designed to be used in conjunction with any existing medical treatments.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant, it will allow us to hire a hall to run the program, supply course material and cover facilitator costs.

“This will give particularly vulnerable individuals access to physical and psychological assistance during a difficult time,” she said.
