A 12-WEEK cancer support course facilitated by a Zen monk in Footscray has been so popular that second program is planned for the suburb.
The Gawler Foundation a non-profit group whose programs focus on meditation, nutrition and lifestyle has been running sessions at Hyde St’s Bluestone Church since May.
The course is based on “self-healing principles” developed by Dr Ian Gawler, a cancer survivor who believes in teaching “how to activate the body’s own mechanisms for healing”.
The “mind-body” approach to cancer therapy still has its critics, with a recent Peter MacCallum Centre study suggesting positive thought alone had little benefit for breast cancer patients.
But over 25 years, the foundation has developed a reputation for a holistic approach to dealing with disease, and Dr Gawler has been awarded an Order of Australia medal for community service.
“(The) program focuses on how people can be helped to work with the medical treatments they are having to minimise side effects, to actively play a part in improving their quality of life and to increase their chances of survival,” Dr Gawler said.
Footscray’s second Cancer Healing and Wellbeing Program starts on Thursday, August 21. Details: the foundation on 5967 1730.
